A vehicle into a storefront looks like a glass problem, because glass is what is all over the sidewalk. It is a structural problem with a glass symptom. The masonry that failed was holding up aluminum framing and glazing, and the moment it goes, that framing is spanning an opening it was never designed to span. What happens in the first hour decides whether this becomes a scheduled repair or a second incident. None of what follows is proprietary — it is ordinary make-safe practice, and the order matters more than any single step in it.
Clear more space than looks necessary
Glass in a bent frame does not always let go at the moment of impact. It lets go later, and it comes down in a sheet. Push people back past the parking bays in front of the opening, not just out of the doorway, and keep them there. The drop zone is wider than the hole.
Photograph it before anything moves
Everything after this changes the scene. Wide shots first, then the failure itself, then what is sitting above it. Whoever prices this later is working from those photographs, and a documented original condition moves faster than a cleaned-up hole that somebody has to take on trust.
Do not move the vehicle yet
Sometimes the car is the only thing still carrying a piece of the framing, and reversing it out is what brings the rest down. This is the call nobody thinks to make, and it takes two minutes: have someone look at what the vehicle is touching before the tow truck does anything.
Shore before you sweep
Vertical posts go under the horizontal member above the failure, on solid bearing top and bottom, packed tight enough to be carrying load rather than standing beside it. Shoring that touches without bearing is decoration, and it fails at the moment it is asked to work. Nothing else gets touched until that is in.
Demolish to sound material, then stop
Take the broken masonry back to solid material and a square edge, and leave a course that is cracked but still bearing. Everything removed past the failure has to be rebuilt afterwards, and the property owner pays for that either way. Enthusiastic demolition is the most expensive mistake available on day one.
Close the opening the same day
Plywood cut to the opening, fastened into sound framing and substrate, sealed at the edges. A building that is secure and weathertight overnight is a building whose repair can be planned. One left open to the street has a second problem coming, and it will not be covered by the first one.
What the six steps have in common is that they buy back control. By the end of the day the structure is supported, the premises are secure, the damage is documented against what actually failed, and the permanent rebuild can be drawn, permitted and priced like any other job instead of decided in a parking lot at dusk. If this happened this morning, the part that matters is the shoring — and it should happen before the vehicle moves.
